Help for Specifics

Sometimes stress has an identifiable source.

It may involve food, housing, health, money, work, relationships, caregiving, loss, legal pressure, or several problems arriving together.

Understanding your response can help, but some stress is not only happening inside you.

Sometimes the situation requires protection, practical action, outside assistance, or change. **

This page can help you identify what may need attention first and choose where to continue.

You do not have to solve everything before beginning.

Is Something Urgent or Unsafe?

Consider whether:

  • anyone is in immediate danger;
  • you may harm yourself or someone else;
  • someone is threatening, hurting, coercing, or controlling you;
  • you have nowhere safe to stay;
  • food, medication, or another essential need is unavailable;
  • urgent medical attention may be needed;
  • or an important deadline or immediate consequence cannot safely wait.

If immediate harm may occur, use emergency or crisis support where you live, move toward greater safety where possible, or tell someone who can help.

If nothing requires immediate intervention, continue with whichever situation comes closest.

What Needs Attention First?

More than one area may be under pressure.

You do not have to choose the perfect category.

Begin with the situation most connected with:

  • immediate safety;
  • basic survival;
  • an approaching deadline;
  • a serious consequence;
  • or your ability to function today.

If none of the categories fit clearly, there is also a place to begin without knowing.

Several Things Are Wrong or I Don’t Know Where to Begin

You may be carrying several connected pressures.

One problem may be affecting every other part of life, or you may not yet know what is causing the distress.

You do not need to separate everything before asking for help.

Begin with what feels most immediate, most visible, or most possible to name.

If the pressure is too intense for you to sort through or act on right now, choose If It All Feels Like Too Much.

About the Help Provided Here

The pages that follow offer general orientation, practical first steps, questions that may help clarify the situation, and pathways toward appropriate support.

They cannot assess your individual circumstances or replace medical care, legal advice, financial advice, crisis intervention, emergency services, or another qualified professional.

Some situations can be helped through understanding and regulation.

Some require practical resources, protection, advocacy, professional assistance, or changes in the conditions themselves.

Often, more than one kind of help is needed.

If you need to begin with how the situation is affecting you emotionally, choose What Are You Feeling Right Now?

If you are young and looking for support, you can start here. We have a page specifically for young people and the situations they may be facing.
